DARK PARADISE

Chris Allery’s practice includes photography, short form fiction, performance and drawing. His work often intersects across these disciplines.
Recognising photography’s mystical properties, Allery places emphasis on planning, improvisation, method, and the accidental.
Over the past five years Allery has investigated the fringe zones of suburbia in southeast Queensland through night photography and writing. This has included an outcrop of hoop pine trees native to his birth town Cooroy. The pines stand steadfast behind the family home and intimately link to Allery’s personal history and the wider mythologies of the forest.
Incorporating spaces charged with memory, meaning and connectedness, the images pair anomaly with the familiar, as well as a sense of the foreboding with the underbelly of the unseen.
