René Danika ‘Left // Right’
2-4 OCTOBER 2020
Opening Event Friday 2nd Oct 2020 6:00 pm to 9pm
Show continues Sat & Sun, 9:00 to 2:00 pm
Presented at West End’s Vacant Assembly (2-4 October, 2020), ‘Left // Right’ is a series of site-specific installations by Brisbane artist René Danika. Through materiality, symbolism and immersive environments, Danika examines political extremism, inherited philosophies and morality. By positioning the viewer within the work, ‘Left // Right’ asks us to consider our own relationship with these themes.
Growing up in a military-family dynamic, Danika works with materials that are emblematic of her experiences. An evolving body of work, ‘Left // Right’ references Danika’s personal symbolism – flowers as grief, bitchumen as structure and foundation, ornate frames as confinement, skin textures as ideas, and tape as the quick fix. In this series, reclaimed taxidermy, faux fur and bitchumen are saturated with black acrylic spray and body-like surface investigations. The toxicity of her materials is deliberate and used as a framework for contemplation. In response to the work, musician Samuel Markovic aka 'Hara Kitty' presents his original composition entitled Tafelmusik Ipecac. Join us for the opening event for a live performance.
Covid restrictions apply and attendance is limited. Bookings are essential.
