Words from the artists

Australia always was and always will be Aboriginal land. We acknowledge and respect the Turrbal and Jagera people, the traditional custodians of this land.

“The colonial additions to the earth, all of the concrete and the bitumen covering the ground are human-permanent things that aren't really permanent. They're like a jacket, this little layer, and the earth gets all hot and bothered and moves and wants to shrug it off.

My paintings are very ~Brisbane-y~ but I think if I lived somewhere else they would be more like that place rather than here. I scratch lines onto the surface of timber boards, abstract shapes and scapes that echo out from around here where I live and spend most of my time.

Steep streets with timber and tin houses, attempting human-straight lines, warping and crack(l)ing in the heat and humidity, the wet and the earth. Walking around here all you ever need is a light jacket."

“My work depicts suburban scenes and textures captured and collected whilst roaming the suburban landscape.

I’m often drawn to stop and look at the older, more modest houses, endeared by their wonky, unpretentious charm.  There is a kind of resistance and resilience to these places.  Resisting the pressure to change, resilient in their sustained existence.  And, deliciously textural: peeling paint, rusty fences, squeaky gates and crumbling concrete surrounded by sprawling gardens and a random pot plant, dotted here and there.  Caught in a pre-nostalgic moment.  A warm welcome, a kindness, a gentle embrace.”
