AUGUST 2023 in The Project Space - Werk Lab

  • Vacant Assembly 266 Montague Road west End, Qld 4101 australia (map)

Werk Lab

Camilla Cassidy, Sarah Seminutin, Jeremy Plint, Kitty Horton and Vincent Smith

Project Description:

Werk Lab is an exercise in play and sitting comfortably with the unknown. The traditional shop/studio/exhibition formats are redefined as four makers hijack its dimensions to experiment with materials and engage with ‘art’ objects; expanding on their individual practices through collaborative exchange, play and the hand of the viewer. The ‘works’ lie mostly unmade. The ‘concepts’ lie undecided. The ‘space’ lies full of possibilities.
Over the month of August, Werk Lab will shape shift through a range of materials, intimate views of the artist’s process and interactive experiences; the likes of which are as yet undecided.

Camila Cassidy

Camilla Cassidy is an artist and educator living in Brisbane. Camilla completed her doctorate from Sydney College of the Arts, the University of Sydney in 2018. Dr Cassidy has spent the intervening years tutoring Painting undergraduates at QCA, Griffith University; TAFE Qld in partnership with the University of Canberra; and SCA, the University of Sydney. As evidenced in this project space, Cassidy’s interests lie in the expanded field of painting.

Sarah Seminutin is a multidisciplinary practitioner, working across the fields of social work, art, making and design. Her work with recycled materials (steel, timber, ceramic, cement, stone etc) explores the ability to transform the ‘discarded’ or ‘wasted’ into industrial domestic objects that regain value and significant lifespan. Her approach to design is driven by improved practices of play and experimentation - innovating, repurposing and revaluing materials. Sarah’s passion for tactility, brings sensory qualities to the forefront of the everyday experience.

Kitty Horton focuses her practice on investigating the correlation between the processes of painting, drawing and printmaking. Constant experimentation with materials through a tactile and intuitive approach to mark making is integral to her work. By joining this collaborative project, Kitty will be expanding a unique 2D mark making processes into the construction of three dimensional abstract forms.

Jeremy Plint is a multidisciplinary artist based in Meanjin who draws from camp aesthetics, ecology, pop culture and religious iconography. Their work examines the intersection between queer identity and familial structure, questioning mainstream notions of belonging. Working primarily with paint and ceramics, Plint reaffirms that alternatives to traditional perceptions of the family are just as successful.

Vincent Smith’s practice sits in the realm of jewellery and utilising various metals in painterly and sculptural contexts. Jewellery making has influenced him to investigate the expressions of semi-precious metals, subverting conventional material values and understandings. In Werk Lab Smith experiments with the material qualities of brass and copper through light, sound and touch.
